25 years up and one million cups of coffee down at Curtin

While Curtin celebrates 50 years of innovation this year, Carol Page has reached a significant milestone of her own – brewing an estimated one million cups of coffee during 25 years at the university.

For the past quarter of a century Carol has worked at some of the Curtin’s favourite cafes run by the Curtin Student Guild.

“I started at Bookmark Café at the library where I was meant to help out for one semester – and here I am 25 years on,’” she says with a laugh.

These days students have sophisticated tastes and Carol’s brew enjoys a loyal following. According to Carol she is a barista who makes coffee the way she likes to drink it.

Carol has seen Curtin grow in the past quarter of a century. Uniforms designs in the cafes have come and gone. When she started her hourly wage was $8.50 and parking cost only $53 a year.

“Students haven’t changed much over the years, they are still after good value for money.”

For Carol, the pizza at Basement Café remains one of her campus favourites and most recently she has been delighting students with a new range of toasted sandwiches including a hard to resist Nutella dessert toastie at the new Guild pop up Hot Stuff.
