MEDIA RELEASE - 6th October 2017

With only 21 days to have a say in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, WA’s most influential student association, the Curtin Student Guild, is urging fellow students to vote yes.

According to Guild President Liam O’Neill, voting yes ensures equality for all Australians.

“Marriage equality is not about politics, it’s about human rights,” said Mr O’Neill.

The Curtin University Guild President said that research had shown that most Australians supported marriage equality and that a victory for the yes campaign would put pressure on the Government to immediately legislate for same sex marriage.

Mr O’Neill said that more than 760 million people now lived in countries where same-sex marriage was legal.

“Twenty six countries have said yes to marriage equality, now it is Australia’s turn,” he said.

Mr O’Neill said that the highly charged atmosphere of the same sex marriage campaign had impacted Curtin’s LGBTI community with some students experiencing heightened anxiety.

“It’s important to vote yes and acknowledge that all love is equal,” he said.

The ABS recommends posting your vote before 27 October to ensure your vote is counted. The results of the survey will be published on 15 November.
