Seventh Day Adventist

Welcome to the Seventh-day Adventist community at Curtin University.

Summary of beliefs

Within the Seventh-day Adventist church, we base all of our teachings on the Bible. The Bible teaches the following core Christian beliefs:

  • God has demonstrated His incredible, self-sacrificing love towards each one of us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Jesus Christ is fully God and became a real, historical human being in order to save us from pain and destruction.
  • Salvation is a free gift that originates purely from God's love for us and can be accepted by anyone through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • We enter into the kingdom of God through baptism by water and the Holy Spirit, and God's plan is for us to live according to the principles of His kingdom through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We do have some unique beliefs, which we have discovered from the Bible. We view these as gifts from God: the Sabbath, health, death as unconscious sleep, Jesus' ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, and the promise of a Universe free of suffering.

Gifts from God:

  1. The gift of the Sabbath: We enjoy keeping the Seventh-day, Saturday, as the Sabbath, which the Bible tells us is a day of rest dedicated to worshipping God and blessing other people. We keep the Sabbath because Jesus kept the Sabbath, in the way that God originally intended it to be kept. The Bible records that God set the Sabbath apart as a special day of rest to enjoy God's Creation and the freedom that He has given us from physical and spiritual slavery.
  2. The gift of health: We value the gift of health that God has given to us and see that it is a gift to be treasured. Hence, we encourage people to live healthy lifestyles, including having a diet that is high in fruit and vegetables, doing regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, avoiding harmful substances, having good rest and trusting in God.
  3. Death as unconscious, sleep: Our careful study has shown that the Bible describes death as an unconscious, sleep-like state. This means that our hope in the face of death is based on Jesus' promise that, at His Second Coming, He will resurrect all believers who have died.
  4. Jesus' ministry in the heavenly sanctuary: We understand that Jesus is currently carrying out a special ministry of intercession for us in the heavenly sanctuary and preparing a place in heaven for us.
  5. The promise of a Universe free of suffering: The prophetic writing of the apostle John promises that one day soon God will recreate and restore the universe according to His original plan. From that time onwards, it will be an incredible joy to live in this new universe, which is totally free of pain and suffering. Anyone can choose to have eternal life, rather than face destruction, by believing in Jesus Christ.

A Welcome from Bruce

As the Seventh-day Adventist chaplain at Curtin, I am here to support anyone who is interested in learning more about the second coming of Jesus and preparing for His soon return. I am also available if you just need someone to talk to about life – both its joys and its challenges. As the Seventh-day Adventist chaplain, I am involved in organising many on campus activities that build a community of people who are following Jesus Christ. In this community, we enjoy spending time with Jesus and also with each other. The Seventh-day Adventist church is a worldwide family, and you can experience the warmth and support of this church family right here at Curtin University.
