Jacquie Bicanic
Hello!
My name is Jacquie Bicanic (she/they) and I am a third-year student studying Property Development and Valuation, and I am running for Vice President-Sustainability and Welfare!
I was part of Curtin’s inaugural Sustainability Challenge in 2022, which ended up being the spark that ignited my passion for sustainability. Since then, I have taken part in FBL’s inaugural Carbon Literacy Program, started volunteering with the UN (WA division), founded the Sustainable Collective at Curtin Club (SCC) and was a driving force behind establishing the role of VP Sustainability and Welfare at the student Guild. I am especially excited to run for the position of Vice President of Sustainability & Welfare for 2024!
I believe that student welfare is a right and is of particular importance during the cost-of-living crisis we are all facing. I have lived experience in public housing, have a personal understanding of mental health struggles, and can fully understand the obstacles that students face. I want to use my time as VP Sustainability & Welfare to campaign for student rights, to support students and to improve the student experience on campus.
If elected to this role, I would dedicate myself to campaigning for:
A non-appointment needed nurse practitioner clinic on campus
Reforming / Improving Curtin Counselling
More all gender bathrooms on campus; ensure any new build or renovation on campus must include all gender bathrooms
Establish a Sustainability Week on campus with events & workshops (e.g. tree planting, clothing repair classes)
Containers for change on campus and in student accommodation with funding going back to students
Permanent thrift store on campus
To make Curtin campus more sustainable overall
